Romance Lessons from Paris
“I love Paris in the springtime”, goes the popular song. Paris is known as the romantic capital of the world. The city of Paris itself has been the subject of countless songs about romance and the pursuit of love. Everything you do in Paris seems enchanted by the air of romance. Think of the idyllic scenes that you’ve seen in the movies: an intimate dinner at a sidewalk café, walking under an ancient stone bridge hand in hand over cobblestone streets, dancing next to an exotic river, smelling the fresh flowers cascading from shuttered windows thrown open to the street. Sounds appealing right? It has been sought after by artists the world over as a place of inspiration and intrigue. Ernest Hemingway, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Miller, Samuel Beckett, and more recently Paul Auster, all relocated to Paris to gain inspiration for their writing. On the street where Ernest Hemingway lived, there is a plaque to memorialize his stay there. He lived across from a popular part of Paris still thriving and bustling with the romantic scenes that must have crept into his writing and inspired his art. There is a nearby café along the side of a roundabout bursting with daffodils and lilies. Parisians are still taking their time conversing and lounging at the nearby café, the common night-life scenes continue that he saw years ago. Ancient cathedrals add an air of mystery and drama to the city of Paris. When walking into the Notre-Dame cathedral, it is still common to hear prayers sung through the echoing grandeur of this magnificent building. Stone gargoyles and carefully crafted etchings adorn the outside of the building and instantly conjure up visions of Victor Hugo’s masterpiece “the Hunchback of Notre-Dame” and its tragic love story between Quasimodo and Esmerelda. One of the most powerful romantic qualities of Paris is its distinct aroma. Air conditioning is still largely unused in much of the city center of Paris. As a result, in the springtime the shutters are thrown open and the aroma of home cooked meals spills into the street. This also adds the sound of daily life in Paris to the full experience that the city provides. You are given a peek into the private lives lived along its streets, as these windows are opened to the world. Flowers abound and mix with the sweet smell of coffee houses and delicious bakeries. Of course, romance is crippled without the addition of captivating aroma, so it makes sense that Paris should provide such a bounty of sweet alluring smells. With all of its mystery and intrigue, there is something to be learned from the romantic reputation of Paris. It pulls us in with an appeal to all of the senses. The visual beauty of stunning architecture and old world style is complimented perfectly by the intoxicating aroma of its city streets. If you want to benefit from some of the romance lessons learned from Paris, you should focus on aroma. It is the easiest way to bring some of that romance into your life. Paris $11.99 Paris is the World, the rest of the Earth is nothing but its suburbs’ – Marivaux In this intelligently-written and supremely entertaining new history, Colin Jones seeks to give a sense of the city of Paris as it was lived in and experienced over time. The focal point of generation upon generation of admirers and detractors, a source of attraction or repulsion even for those who have never been there, Paris has witnessed more extraordinary events than any other major city. No spot on earth has been more walked around, written about, discussed, painted and photographed. With an eye for the revealing, startling and (sometimes) horrible detail, Colin Jones takes the reader from Roman Paris to the present, recreating the ups and downs in the history of the city and its inhabitants. Attentive to both the urban environment and to the experience of those who lived within it, PARIS: BIOGRAPHY OF A CITY will be hugely enjoyed by habitual Paris obsessives, by first-time visitors, and by those who know the city only by repute. |

On Paris $15.43 Written for the "Toronto Star" between 1920 and 1924, this selection of energetic pieces from Hemingway sees the author focus his gaze on Paris. Writing with characteristic verve, the author tackles cultural topics in chapters such as Living on $1,000 a Year in Paris, American Bohemians in Paris, and Parisian Boorishness. "The scum of Greenwich Village, New York, has been skimmed off and deposited in large ladles on that section of Paris adjacent to the Cafe Rotonde. New scum, of course, has risen to take the place of the old, but the oldest scum, the thickest scum and the scummiest scum," Hemingway wryly observes, "has come across the ocean, somehow, and with its afternoon and evening levees has made the Rotonde the leading Latin Quarter showplace for tourists in search of atmosphere." |

Paris, Paris $11.99  “Beautifully written and refreshingly original… makes us see [Paris] in a different light.” — San Francisco Chronicle Book Review   Swapping his native San Francisco for the City of Light, travel writer David Downie arrived in Paris in 1986 on a one-way ticket, his head full of romantic notions. Curiosity and the legs of a cross-country runner propelled him daily from an unheated, seventh-floor walk-up garret near the Champs-Elysées to the old Montmartre haunts of the doomed painter Modigliani, the tombs of Père-Lachaise cemetery, the luxuriant alleys of the Luxembourg Gardens and the aristocratic Île Saint-Louis midstream in the Seine. Downie wound up living in the chic Marais district, married to the Paris-born American photographer Alison Harris, an equally incurable walker and chronicler. Ten books and a quarter-century later, he still spends several hours every day rambling through Paris, and writing about the city he loves.  An irreverent, witty romp featuring thirty-one short prose sketches of people, places and daily life, Paris, Paris : Journey into the City of Light ranges from the glamorous to the least-known corners and characters of the world’s favorite city.  Photographs by Alison Harris.   “I loved his collection of essays and anyone who’s visited Paris in the past, or plans to visit in the future, will be equally charmed as well.” —David Lebovitz, author of The Sweet Life in Paris   “[A] quirky, personal, independent view of the city, its history and its people”—Mavis Gallant   “Gives fresh poetic insight into the city… a voyage into ‘the bends and recesses, the jagged edges, the secret interiors’ [of Paris].”— Departures From the Trade Paperback edition. |

‘Round Midnight $6.99 A French music lover befriends a once-great American jazz artist and attempts to save him from self-destruction in this moody drama. Saxophonist Dexter Gordon portrays Dale Turner, a fictional musician inspired by a number of famed jazz figures, including Bud Powell and Lester Young. Largely forgotten in his home country, Turner has moved to Paris in search of a more appreciative audience. He finds it in the form of Francis Borler (Francois Cluzet), a bebop aficionado who befriends the expatriate player. Borler soon becomes familiar with Turner’s darker side, including his struggles with alcoholism, drug addiction, and depression. Fearing for the musician’s life, the fan becomes his caretaker, an arrangement that leads to a brief improvement in Turner’s health and fortunes but places great emotional strain upon them both. Director Bertrand Tavernier pays great attention to the visual and aural details of the jazz world, with outstanding musical supervision provided by Herbie Hancock. ‘Round Midnight’s greatest asset, however, is Gordon’s Academy Award-nominated performance, informed by his own life experiences. His naturally fascinating presence combines with the film’s obvious love of the music and its milieu to provide what many have hailed as one of the more authentic and affectionate presentations of the jazz world on the silver screen. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi |

1,2,3 Soleils [Mondo Melodia 2001] $14.99 On September 26, 1998, in Paris, France, one of the major events of Algerian music took place — the concert termed 1,2,3 Soleils. Together on the same stage Khaled (the king of rai), Rachid Taha (the musical rebel), and Faudel (rai’s young prince) entertained a crowd of over 14,000. It was a coming of age for the music and for the Algerians themselves, too long regarded as second-class citizens. The audience’s excitement is palpable right from the start, as the orchestra (arranged throughout by former prog rocker Steve Hillage) launches into the instrumental “Khalliouni Khalliounni” to massive cheers that only become louder as the three principals take the stage to share vocal duties on “Menfi.” From there it’s a series of duets and solos and two more trios in the middle before they come together for three more tunes at the end, culminating in an explosive version of the classic “Ya Rayah” before closing out with “Comme D’Habitude.” Certainly one of the most interesting pairings is “Eray” with Faudel and Khaled together, the youngster holding his own with the master. It’s tempting to think of it as handing on the baton, but instead it’s really two wonderful vocalists singing as if their lives depended on it — as is the case when they come together again for Khaled’s hit “Aicha.” For their solo spots (Khaled, as the biggest name, gets two), each man gives his party piece, “Ida” for Taha and the hit “Tellement N’Brick” for Faudel (Khaled contributes “Wahrane Wahrane” and an R&B take on his breakthrough “N’ssi N’ssi” that turns it into an Marvin Gaye-goes-rai number). Perhaps inevitably, it’s Khaled, the best-established and best-loved performer, who casts the longest shadow, and Taha, the iconoclast, who seems most in the background, although he does shine given his moments in the spotlight. It’s great music that is expansively performed and the album is a commemoration of a moment that’s as much historical as musical. ~ Chris Nickson, Rovi |

1789: The Long and the Short of It $118.74 Twelve essays by as many scholars reconsider the French Revolution in the long term and the short term, examining both the immediate events of 1789 and their long shadow over other countries and times, including our own. Some chapters focus on the Paris experience, others give a glimpse of the Revolution in the provinces or beyond the borders of France itself. To determine what it achieved, what it meant, and what it continues to mean, the scope of the study must include history and art, science and literature, Switzerland, England, Germany, Russia, Napoleon’s Europe and Mitterand’s. These essays originated as public lectures in the University of Sheffield, and retain much of their original liveliness and broad appeal. From a variety of vantage points they view a crucial moment in post-Renaissance history, and gauge how the light of that moment shines in our own time. |

1815 the Return of Napoleon $40.75 – A superb narrative of Napoleon’s return to France in 1815– The first of two volumes on Napoleon in 1815– A brilliant survey of French attitudes to NapoleonThis unique and atmospheric volume presents the dramatic story of Napoleon’s escape from Elba and march on Paris in the words of eyewitnesses and participants. Drawing on hundreds of first-hand accounts by Napoleon’s supporters and opponents, Paul Britten Austin recreates the drama of those tumultuous days of the Spring of 1815 and throws light on the mixed French response to the unexpected return of their former emperor. 1815: The Return of Napoleon recreates, in the words of those present, Napoleon’s dramatic landing at Antibes in the south of France, the first heady days of his arrival after almost a year of exile, his almost miraculous march across France, his arrival in Paris, and the coup which led to the fall of the Bourbons. |

It took place at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France, from May 25 through June 8, 2008. Justine Henin did not defend her trophy due to her retirement from the sport on May 14. Her retirement meant that the French Open would have a new women”s champion in 2008, and Ana Ivanovi, the runner-up to Henin in 2007, was the victor. On the men”s side, Rafael Nadal equalled Bjrn Borg”s record of four consecutive titles in the open era. Other competitions included men and women”s doubles, junior singles and doubles as well as wheelchair and ”veteran” competitions. |

It assesses progress in 55 developing countries and helps us understand the challenges in making aid more effective in advancing development.
