Chu: New materials could be transformative (MIT)

In a talk rich with historical examples, U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu
made a strong case Wednesday that the right policies — and concerted efforts
by the nation’s engineers and scientists — could once again produce
significant growth in domestic manufacturing jobs, while addressing global
problems of energy supply and climate change.

In his talk at MIT, Chu delivered a history of “transformative technologies,”
including the invention of artificial fertilizer and the “Green Revolution,”
which together unleashed explosive growth in world food production; the
creation of the automotive assembly line by Henry Ford, which made cars
available to the mass market; and the invention of the transistor and
integrated circuits at Bell Labs, which unleashed the digital revolution that
has transformed people’s lives in countless ways.

What the United States needs now, he said, is new transformative technologies
in energy, especially ones that could boost the competitiveness of renewable,
carbon-free technologies.

In a seeming reference to recent controversy over federal loan guarantees for
the solar-panel maker Solyndra, Chu pointed out that a century ago the
government had invested in the development of airplane technology, providing

AF5U Flying Pancake 1/27 Scale Model Aircraft $140.95 The brainchild of Charles H. Zimmerman, the F5U was intended to perform well as a fighter plane while being able to remain in flight at extremely low airspeed, making it easier to operate from carriers. The F5Us unusual appearance owed to a very low aspect ratio wing without a fuselage, which resulted in something looking like a flying saucer. This shape, combined with powerful engines driving large propellers, could plow through the air at low speed (40 mph!), since the whole airframe is immersed in the prop wash. The AF5U Flying Pancake was manufactured by Vought. It was a fighter aircraft and the brainchild of Charles Zimmerman during World War II. Its maiden flight was on the 23rd of November 1942 and its production was cancelled on the 17th of March 1947. The AF5U was the most unusual aircraft designed for the U.S. Navy. It consists of a flat, somewhat disk-shaped body with a very low aspect ratio wing without fuselage that looks like a flying saucer. The AF5U has two 1,600 hp Pratt and Whitney R-2000 radial engines. Its configuration was designed to have a low aspect ratio aircraft that will have a low takeoff and landing speed and high top speed. It can accommodate only one, the pilot; it has a length of 28 ft. 7 in.; wingspan of 32 ft. 6 in.; height of 14 ft. 9 in.; empty weight of 13,107 lbs., loaded weight of 16,722 lbs. and max takeoff weight of 18,772 lbs. It has a maximum speed of 425 mph; range of 1,064 miles; rate of climb 718 ft. per minute; and service ceiling of 34,492 ft. It has 6 x .50 machine guns or 4 x 20 mm machine guns or 2 x 1000 lb. bombs. The aircrafts main problem was its gearbox which produces unacceptable amounts of vibration. Excerpt: Little Earthquakes (1992) is the solo debut album of singer/songwriter Tori Amos, featuring the singles “Winter”, “China”, “Silent All These Years” and “Crucify”. After leaving her home in Baltimore for Los Angeles in 1984, Amos spent three years as a struggling bar-room pianist and lounge act, performing a mix of covers and her own songs. In 1986, she co-founded the synthpop band Y Kant Tori Read, and was signed to Atlantic Records. The band released an eponymous album in 1988 but it sank without a trace, and the band dissolved. In 1990, Tori came back to Atlantic Records with a 10-track demo tape. The track listing consisted of “Russia” (later to become “Take To The Sky”) / “Mary” / “Crucify” / “Happy Phantom” / “Leather” / “Winter” / “Sweet Dreams” / “Song For Eric” / “Learn To Fly" / Flying Dutchman”. The album was then recorded in three phases. The first batch of tracks (“Crucify”, “Silent All These Years”, “Winter”, “Happy Phantom”, “Leather”, “Mother”, “Sweet Dreams”, “Russia/Take To The Sky”, “Upside Down” and “Flying Dutchman”) were cut at Capitol Records in Los Angeles with Davitt Sigerson producing.
